- Bandolier

Bandolier is a journal about health care, which is published monthly in conjunction
with the NHS Executive for healthcare professionals and consumers. It is a
useful source of evidence-based information, which is obtained mainly from
systematic reviews and high-quality clinical trials. The information is presented
as 'bullet points'. Bandolier is available in print and on the Internet, but
the online versions can be several months behind the printed issue.
- British Medical Journal (BMJ)

Online publication: This website allows you to search articles published
in the BMJ back to 1994. It also contains material that is only available
on the website.

- Cochrane Reviews from the The Cochrane Collaboration

Online publication: The Cochrane Reviews, which are the principal
output of the Cochrane Collaboration, are published electronically in successive
issues of The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The preparation
and maintenance of Cochrane reviews are the responsibility of international
collaborative review groups. The existing and planned review groups (numbering
more than 40) cover most of the important areas of health care. The members
of these groups include researchers, health care professionals and consumers.
Members share an interest in generating reliable, up-to-date evidence that
is relevant to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of particular
health problems, or groups of problems.

Governmental organisation: The Department of Health invests in research
and development to support government objectives for public health, health
services and social care, as well as contributing to the government's science
strategy.

Online database/list of information: This website lists online resources
of interest to EMWA members, and others involved in all aspects of health
care. Resources include: search engines, sources of medical information, drug

- Hardin's Meta-Directory

Hardin's Meta-Directory is a directory of resource lists in health-related
subjects. The lists are organised under broad specialty headings.
- Help for Health Trust

Health information for consumers: The Help for Health Trust is the
leading supplier of consumer health information in the United Kingdom. The
Trust is an independent, not-for-profit charitable organisation, which is
based in Winchester, Hampshire.
- How to find the evidence - the basics. An online course provided
by The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), University of Sheffield.

- Medical Research Council (MRC)

Research funding organisation +: The MRC aims to improve health by
promoting research into all areas of medical and related science. It supports
medical research in three main ways: through its research establishments;

The NGC is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines
and related documents.
- National Electronic Library for Health (NeLH)

Online library: The National Electronic Library for Health (NeLH) Programme
is working with NHS Libraries to develop a digital library for NHS staff,
patients and the public. The current website is a pilot site, which is mainly
for NHS staff.
- Netting the Evidence

A ScHARR Introduction to Evidence Based Practice on the Internet.
This website is designed to provide support and access to information about
evidence-based healthcare.

- Organising Medical Networked Information (OMNI)

OMNI is a gateway to evaluated resources in health and medicine. It includes
access to Internet resources for nurses, midwives and staff in professions
allied to medicine. It aims to provide comprehensive coverage of the UK resources
in this area and access to the best resources worldwide. The collection is
continuously updated.

Online library: PubMed is an international service of the US National
Library of Medicine. It provides free access to millions of citations (including
many abstracts) from MEDLINE and some other life-science journals. PubMed
includes links to many websites that provide the full text of individual articles
and other related resources.

Online publication: This journal started in 1992. It reflects and reports
on initiatives to improve the quality of health care. It is a multidisciplinary
journal and receives contributions from all disciplines of health care professionals.

Online database of research funding opportunities: This website provides
researchers with access to information on health-related funding and training
opportunities. The database currently holds information from 863 funding bodies,
offering 2027 different awards.
- Retrieving Evidence in South & West for Clinical Effectiveness: How
to find the evidence - the basics

Online course: A short course that is designed for use by health professionals.
It aims to provide an overview of the information resources that are available
to locate research evidence, and the process of translating a clinical question
into an effective search strategy.

and Utilisation Databases
