Innovation: enterprise and entrepreneurship

Within innovation, the enterprise and entrepreneurship area is led by Dr Chris Loughlan and specialises in working with clients to understand and support entrepreneurship and enterprise development – whether in individuals, businesses, organisations or communities.

The Institute undertakes a range of applied policy research, strategy and professional development projects on behalf of public and not-for-profit organisations including national Government departments, regional development agencies, universities and business support organisations.

The issues of how to encourage a more dynamic start-up and small business market and how to build an enterprising culture remain two key Government priorities. At a general level, the issue of supporting and understanding enterprise and entrepreneurship is surrounded by a combination of fact and anecdote which are commonly used by policy makers and practitioners as evidence to support new policies or initiatives. The majority of businesses in the UK have less than 50 employees and contribute disproportionately to job creation, at a time when large businesses are shedding jobs.

We are currently working with a number of representative business organisations in the UK to help them better understand their training and development needs in relation to sustaining an enterprise and entrepreneurship culture.

Dr Loughlan is currently Interim Project Director for the Cambridgeshire Heath Innovation and Education Cluster - a Department of Health policy initiative to stimulate innovation at sub regional level in the health care sector.
