Aim of this Module
To provide an introduction of how statistical concepts can be implemented to estimate the relevant quantities describing populations, including measures of uncertainty of such estimates.
Objectives of this Module
- To introduce statistical inference as the use of sample data to draw conclusions about populations;
- To contrast standard error and standard deviation as applied to sample means and individuals, respectively;
- To demonstrate the fundamental importance of the normal distribution in the construction of confidence intervals;
- To derive formulae for evaluating confidence intervals in simple, commonly encountered cases;
- To promote awareness of the proper interpretation of confidence intervals
